About The Project
The Moth is a passion project from writer/director Darius Valentine.
"The Moth" is a true story of deceit, betrayal, and people not being who they appear to be.
In 2015, while on a hike in the Appalachian mountains, Riley and her girlfriend found a grave. The headstone had no name. Just a dead moth taped to it. When tragedy strikes, the mystery behind the moth is painfully revealed.
“The Moth” is a blend of drama and thriller aimed to keep the viewer guessing and on the edge of their seat from the first frame through to the last.
Our main goal with “The Moth” is to make a splash in an already saturated market. So how do we plan to do that? Well first and foremost, dedication. Our team is made up entirely of extremely dedicated and talented individuals who aim to make a career in the film industry. To quote Lou Bloom (Nightcrawler) “If you want to win the lottery, you have to make the money to buy a ticket.” Getting a major job in the film industry is like winning the lottery, you have a very slim chance at success. But that’s why you are reading this right now. Because we are not just going to sit around and wait for someone to tell us it’s okay to make a movie and start doing what we love and strive to do. We are ready to put in the work in order to (hopefully) get recognition. Which is another one of our major goals. In the day and age of YouTube, it is very easy for quality short films to go unnoticed or skipped altogether because there are so many of them. With “The Moth” we aim to get accepted to film festivals across the country with the hope of winning awards, receiving recognition for our hard work, and maybe even getting distribution. Lastly, all who are involved just want to make movies. So even if festivals fall through, we will all have made a short film that we are proud of.
What makes “The Moth” different from all other drama/thriller short films? Again, going back to the dedication. We are not making this short film just for the money. We are all working as hard as we can to make a name for ourselves so that we can have the jobs we dream of. Also, “The Moth” is going to stand out both cinematically and thematically. There are a few themes within “The Moth” that some people may shy away from. Without spoiling anything, one example is the fact that two of the main characters are a lesbian couple. And with that said, another thing that will make “The Moth” different and stand out is the fact that the lead role belongs to a female. “The Moth” is aimed to bring a sense of strength to female characters and break the stereotype of them being seen as weak and having to rely on males to get things done. Cinematically, “The Moth” will stand out as well because of the Director, Darius Valentine’s, unique, nonconventional style. With the use of long takes, minimal use of handheld and sometimes unique camera coverage, “The Moth” will look and feel different than many conventional drama/thriller films out there. Partnering again with his longtime collaborator and Director of Photography, Craig Thiessen, the two are ready to make each shot look beautiful, professional, unique, and worth watching.
“The Moth” will shoot January 18th through January 21st in Deposit, NY. A location has been secured to use as a set. We also have a very talented cast and crew on board.
Going forward, the Director, Darius Valentine and the Director of Photography, Craig Thiessen, will begin breaking down the script into individual shots and figure out everything that is needed and have everything planned in advance. While they’re doing that. the cast will be breaking down the script, memorizing lines, and determining how they are going to play their characters.
The $5,875 goal set here is the bare bones minimum to make this short film. Every dollar counts and every dollar over the set goal will be used to make the short film EVEN better.
